Naming the record a family file is indicative that family members belong in the file together. When in fact, individuals should only be lumped in the family file record together based on who the guarantor is and if someone is a dependent of the subscriber insurance etc. There are many ways you can indicate patient/non- patient within current family file which we use. However, ultimately the naming of family file can create confusion about when it’s appropriate to put individuals in a single family file. The criteria isn’t that they are family.
I also think it would be helpful for Dentrix to provide a best practices document on when it’s appropriate to put individuals in a family file with others.
