Each state may be different. In this state we are required to hold a chart of record for 7 years after the last dental visit. After that the records can be destroyed/deleted. That was easy in the paper chart days. When it had been 8 years since you had seen that patient, you could shred the chart. However, now we have people that have been deceased 10+ years and all we can do is archive their chart. There is no reason to maintain data like that for eternity. We need a way to purge the database of files/charts which are no longer required for us to keep. Give us the option to delete patient charts completely from the system where appropriate.
