Want to be able to do a search for check number to see which patients are tied to it in the ledger

This is already a feature.
Open the ledger - File > Search Payments (a little further than mid-way down)
Enter the check number and adjust days if you know when it was posted (makes it quicker), then a full list of patients connected to the check pop up - you can even click on the patient's names to pull up their ledger.
